Cops and Robbers

I need to find something to jam under the van, thought Kalvin, to keep them from leaving.

He looked around for some large item around the yard and spotted a tree stump in the front yard. The light in the house had gone out.

The men must be asleep; I’ll have to be careful not to make a lot of noise.

Kalvin wrapped his lower arm tentacles around the stump and pulled as hard as he could. The stump loosened a little, but the tree roots still held tight. Kalvin tried rocking the stump from side to side. The stump’s roots were anchored too deeply in the earth. The stump barely moved.

I need to find something else. It will take too much time for me to pull up the stump. The brick steps at the back of the house aren’t attached to anything. They shouldn’t weigh more than five or six hundred pounds.

Kalvin reached down with his lower arms and pulled the steps away from the house. Picking them up was harder than he thought.

I think these steps are closer to seven hundred pounds. I’ll pick up the back of the van with my upper arms and place the steps under the rear wheels.

Kalvin had to set the steps down twice before he reached the van. As quietly as possible, he picked up the rear of the van with his lower arms and passed it up to his upper arms. While he held the van up, he tried to lift the steps, but that task was too much for him. Kalvin pushed on the steps with his lower arms but couldn’t slide the steps over the rough ground. Lifting the back end of the van, he dragged the vehicle over the steps. When he eased the van down, the back wheels were a foot off the ground. Kalvin tugged on the license plate. The tearing metal made a loud, creaking sound. Kalvin paused for a minute and watched the house, but luckily no lights came on.

I have to be careful not to make that much noise again. I’ll bend the tag back and forth until it breaks loose.

It took Kalvin longer than he had hoped, but eventually he broke the tag free. Clutching the tag in one arm, he started toward the end of the driveway. On the way, he picked up three large rocks.

Jake was late. The first rays of sunshine shone in the eastern sky. Kalvin stopped at the edge of the road and watched a truck pass by. A little later, a U-Haul truck turned in the drive.

When the U-Haul disappeared up the driveway, Kalvin set the rocks down at the front of the driveway.

They’re not as big as I had wanted, but it’ll take the men a few minutes to remove them. I need to get to the shack before the police car comes this way.

Kalvin pulled and pushed himself through the kudzu patch to the abandoned house. He tore the back door off its hinges, entered the shack and took a computer.
